Interlude: Tira, the Adventurer 1

Falling. Tira was falling. She’d fallen before, when she became a dungeon core, but this was different. This was not falling in space. She was falling back, so far…to a place. The exterior of a bar that was called…what had it been called? Oh, that’s right, she remembered now. It had been known as The Drunken Lout for so many years, even now that it had changed owners, everyone else still called it The Drunken Lout. Even though The Bard’s Regret was a fairly evocative name, it sounded too hard, like it was trying to be interesting. It lacked the character of The Drunken Lout.

Tira was the one person who called it The Bard’s Regret. That was the name now, no matter how much anyone liked the old name. Names were a bit of a sticking point for her.

She pushed open the door and immediately heard a welcoming call from a table near the corner. “Got here early, since you all would be late,” the speaker said. Caldor. Copper Three Saint. “How’s the worst tank on the Sphere doing?”

Tira lazily made a rude gesture as she slid into the seat next to him. “I don’t know. I haven’t heard from your father since I visited him last week. He seemed reverent when I left him.”

Caldor’s forehead furrowed, then a moment later he caught the joke and laughed. “Deep in exaltations to the gods, eh?”

Tira smirked. “Hey, look at you, drawing an inference. Keep this up and in a few years, maybe we can work you all the way up to basic metaphors. Thank the gods we keep you around for your healing and not your brains.”

“That would be my job,” said another voice from a seat across the table, making both Tira and Caldor jump. Tira scowled as Caldor laughed.

“I hate it when you do that,” Tira said to the man, although she couldn’t keep up the outrage for long. “Brum. How long have you been sitting there, wasting mana on Stealth?”

Their rogue flashed Tira a grin. The Urkin was thin for his people, which still made him more muscular than most humans Tira had ever met. “Long enough for the perfect entrance,” he said.

Tira sighed. “What about the others? I’m usually the last one.”

“Shanah was here earlier,” Caldor said. “But she decided to see if she could get her shopping in. And Paul is late.”

That made Tira frowned. Paul was the newest member of the party, a rare Knight who chose damage over healing and went down the Zealot Mastery. Still, over the past two months, Tira had learned a few things about the man. Sure, he was strange, but he was punctual—almost inhumanly so. He’d joked about having a magic artifact that let him know time down to the minute.

“Hope he’s okay,” Tira said.

“He’ll be fine,” Caldor said. “You know how he is. Probably off daydreaming of his far-off land.”

As if summoned, the door to the Inn went flying open. Shanah was there, with one arm around Paul’s waist.
